10 Perks Only Working Moms Get to Enjoy

Us working moms do a whole lot of talking about just how hard it is to have it all!

So often we read about the drudgery of being a working mom: the early mornings, long days, late evenings, and short nights. The never 100% for your kids and never 100% for your work. There’s just not enough time for your family, your home, or your career but some how you’re expected to be the star of the show in each area of your life. Finding the balance can feel completely impossible at times but somehow, you’re doing it!

And let’s be honest, there actually are some great things about working outside your home! Some little perks that we just might want to keep secret from the SAHMs and the WAHMs.

You get to drink hot coffee!

All those mom memes about finding your coffee cold in strange locations throughout the house only apply to you on the weekends! During the week, you get to drink your coffee without anyone interrupting you to wipe their tush!

You get to wear something besides yoga pants.

Okay, okay, sometimes we all wish we could just live in our Lululemons and mom bun but other days it feels fantastic to slide into a pencil skirt and a pair of heels.

You’ve been forced to become super organized.

For those who have always been a bit chaotic, balancing child care, school, extracurricular activities, work, social functions and just plain life has given us no choice but to become really organized and maintain a strict schedule. Who would have known it was even possible!

You are raising independent children.

Did you know that kids whose moms work outside the home become more capable of day to day tasks sooner! Considering independence is the ultimate parenting goal, I’d call that a huge benefit.

You are less likely to suffer from depression.

Studies have shown that mothers who work outside the home are less likely to suffer from depression than those who do not work outside the home.

People actually appreciate you.

When you’re home with your kids it feels like the laundry never ends and the greatest sign of a successful day is that everyone is still alive, and the house is no messier than it was when the day started. When was the last time your kids called you in for a performance review or just commended you for a job well done?

You are a positive role model to the little girls in your life.

There is no better way to share a value with children than to model it. Little girls need to know that they can be what and who they want to be and that they can be mothers without giving up on their other dreams.

For me, being a mother made me a better professional, because coming home every night to my girls reminded me what I was working for. And being a professional made me a better mother, because pursuing my dreams, I was modeling for my girls how to pursue their dreams.

You can justify to hiring a housekeeper.

Hiring regular housekeeping is life changing. And you deserve it! It’s not that stay at home parents can’t hire help, it’s just a whole lot easier to justify when you’re a working mama. Enjoy your downtime and spend it with your family, not scrubbing the toilets and baseboards.

Sure, you can make amazing friends at the local playgroup but the kind of relationships you build at work are like no other. It’s so much fun to have friends that you have more in common with than motherhood. Friends who really get what it’s like to do what you do and who feel the same passion you do!

And we can’t forget… the moolah!

It’s awesome to make your own money, contribute to your family, know that you could make it on your own if you had to, and feel secure in your family’s financial future.

Being a working mom is never easy, not for one day. Between trying to be the best mom I can, managing my business as a sleep consultant, and working as a NICU nurse, I sometimes can’t believe the balls are all still in the air! At the end of the day though, I wouldn’t trade this crazy busy life for anything! I am so passionate about the work I do and the families I help that I can’t imagine my life any other way.

It’s always hard. I see you. We got this, Momma!
