A simple nursery provides a sleepy space for your little one.
One of the first things that new parents start thinking about is “What color should we paint the nursery?”
It’s only natural that decorating the nursery immediately becomes “a thing”. It’s often the first tangible evidence of your baby’s impending arrival – minus the bloating and unrecognisable ultrasound images.
You’ve probably been dreaming up flawless combinations of wall color, bedding, and mobile. I know I was! But if I knew then what I know now, I would have left the room grey and spent more time researching crib safety and less time searching for the perfect mobile.
When a functional nursery, it’s important to keep in mind what the nursery will be primarily used for: sleep.
A nursery that facilitates sleep might be designed a little differently than one that is going to be featured in your favorite home magazine.
There are 4 important things to keep in mind when planning a nursery that is the perfect sleep environment.
The perfect nursery is dark.
Invest in good quality black-out blinds or drapes. Pottery Barn Kids has some gorgeous options! I recommend your baby sleep in the same place for naps and night time so ensuring the room the crib is in stays nice and dark will mean both nap time and bed time go smoother.
The perfect nursery is boring.
This is probably not what you want to hear on your search for the perfect nursery décor plan.
All of those light up “soothing” gadgets, colorful mobiles, and pretty wall hangings look fabulous and some appear deceptively soothing. The trouble is they’re a distraction and are often stimulating making it difficult for your baby to go to sleep.
Keep it simple with a muted wall color, a well organised changing station, and a crib free of bumper pads and gadgets.
The perfect nursery is cool.
I know it sounds a bit chilly, but babies sleep best in rooms that are between 18 and 21 degrees. Keeping the room dark, as suggested above, will help keep it cool. If your baby seems too cold, dress them in a warm but comfortable sleep sack.
The perfect nursery is comfortable.
Babies and small children spend a lot of time sleeping, making a high quality mattress a smart investment. Forget about fancy bedding and stuffed toys and choose fitted sheets in neutral colors. West Coast Kids right here in Calgary has some lovely options.
While a nursery for sound sleep isn’t going to be a decorating adventure, there will be plenty of time to decorate and redecorate as your little one grows. For personalized advice on creating the perfect sleep space for your baby, I welcome you to book a complimentary consultation with me.
